[Somag News] Corona Virus May Affect Apple's iPhone Production
Apple, which manufactures iPhone models in China because of its cheap labor, asked its suppliers to produce around 80 million iPhones in the first half of this year. 65 million of this figure is the iPhone 11 series, while 15 million are the new affordable iPhone model, which is expected to be launched in March.
According to GF Securities data, Apple produced around 73 million iPhones in the same period of last year. Due to the high demand for the new flagship series, the company may have to revisit its production schedule, going through an active period.
Apple's Asian suppliers warn that iPhone production speeds may decrease
According to the information provided by Nikkei Asian Review, Apple's suppliers warned the US technology giant that Henan and Guangdong provinces, where its main production centers are located, have reported more than 100 cases of Corona viruses and therefore production speeds may decline.
Chinese authorities have reported that there are more than 4,600 confirmed cases so far, and the number of casualties has reached 106. A team of British and US scientists predicts that the virus can infect more than 190,000 people by 4 February.
An iPhone supply chain manager told Nikkei that the Corona virus creates 'great uncertainties and difficulties' in the production of both iPhone and AirPods. Terry Gou, the founder of Foxconn, the world's largest iPhone manufacturer, said in a statement last week that he was extremely worried about the virus.
Analysts warn that the virus may also hit China's weakening economic growth rate. The Chinese economy, which has been heavily wounded by the trade war with the United States, may enter into a massive chaos both socially and economically if the new virus epidemic is not brought under control. Scientists have not yet been able to find the origin and treatment of the mysterious virus that first appeared in Wuhan.
